Presidential candidate before election

Rebecca Shimmerman

Elected Presidential candidate

Tauren Ó Marcaigh

The presidential primary for Ár Ré's presidential candidate in the July 4119 elections was held from January to March 4119. A total of 104,340 ballots were cast.

Background[]

With the incumbent presidential candidate for Ár Ré, Rebecca Shimmerman, having announced that she would not run for President in 4119 (she died in 4116), a presidential primary was automatically called to be held in the year 4119. Tauren Ó Marcaigh, the Leader of Ár Ré, announced that she would run for the post two years before the primary began its nomination process. April McConaughey, the Spokesperson for National Development, also announced her intention to run in 4118.

Procedure[]

Unlike leadership elections, where a maximum of six candidates could participate in the election, presidential primaries allow for an unlimited number of candidates to run, including those who have not held elected office under the Ár Ré banner. However, under the revised Constitution ratified in 4110, candidates were required to garner the support of at least 10,000 party members to be presented on the ballot paper. As there was no write-in option, this effectively excluded those who did not meet that requirement from running in the presidential primary.

Nominations opened on January 11th and closed on January 23rd. Campaigning lasted for two months until March the 23rd. Ballots were sent out on March the 1st and had to be returned by March the 23rd; the ballots were processed at regional counting centres in each of the five provinces from the 23rd through to the 31st. The official tally will be announced at a special party conference on March the 31st.

Tauren Ó Marcaigh win

Analysis[]

The result was considered to be a slim victory for Marcaigh, who was losing popularity due to her nationalistic, pro-Kilani stances. She won her province of the provinces of Dirguzia and Uwakah due to her generally more progressive and permissive views. McConaughey handily won the her home province of Nuchtmark, and also scored well in Dirlana, both generally more conservative and Luthori-oriented states. Marcaigh won Merkan, her home province, by the tightest margin of all as support was split between her pro-Kilani policies and McConaughey's more pro-militaristic policies.
