Norm Carbines was elected to Parliament in August 3263. A year later, he was elected Deputy Leader of the Liberals. In 3269, he was easily reelected Deputy Leader.
Following the resignation of Guillaume d'Estaing, Carbines was named interim leader over Louise Volt, the female Deputy Leader.
As Party Leader, he combined the Deputy Leadership positions. He felt that the party no longer needed a representative from both genders. Carbines argued that the concept was outdated.
Shortly after becoming leader, rumors began to circulate that Carbines would be subject to a leadership election if the party lost seats in the upcoming parliamentary election. While most MP's opted to remain quiet on the issue, Eve Kuchera decided to publicly announce her intention to stand for the leadership if the Liberals lost seats.
In 3279, the Liberals saw unexpected gains in the parliamentary elections. The Liberals gained a stunning 57 seats and became the largest party in Parliament. However, Felipe Casagrande, the Liberal candidate for President, was overwhelmingly defeated and won only 42% of the vote.
Following the elections, Carbines worked diligently to form a government. However, the opposition parties refused to let this happen. Instead of becoming Prime Minister, Carbines remained Opposition Leader despite having the largest number of seats in Parliament.
In April 3282, Carbines announced his plans to form a new government. Carbines had hoped to govern with the Urban Party. The Urban Party voted against the proposal and Carbines was left to deal with the consequences.
Shortly before the winter recess, Carbines was challenged for the leadership. In a close vote, he was defeated by Paul Kilgariff.
Carbines served in Parliament until his defeat in August 3287. His defeat marked the end of a 24 year parliamentary career. Shortly after he left Parliament, he died at his home.
