Region Information[]

The Free Union of Kirlawa was a nation in Artania in the region of Kirlawa from 2337 to 2369. It was formed following the First Kirlawan Civil War and dissolved shortly after the Second Kirlawan Civil War.

History[]

The Free Union of Kirlawa came into being in 2337 following the collapse of the former Free Democratic Union of Kirlawa (see Kirlawan-Dorvish Border War and Kirlawan Civil War) when the nation was split up in the Four-State Solution following a conference in New Kreshka. The Free Union of Kirlawa was formed from the area occupied by opposition guerillas, spanning Merkan, most of Uwakah, west Dirlana and south Dirguzia. The nation held its first federal elections in 2337 under the IRV-AMS system, resulting in a majority for the Leftist Coalition. A Cabinet of eighteen ministers was appointed, lead by Kirlawa Democratic Labour leader Charlie Tanner.

The Free Union became an active member of negotiations between the Kirlawan nations of the course of the late 2330s, with Foreign Minister Thomas York adopting a stance supporting the absolvation of the DRK and DU if a majority were in favour. The FUK came out in 2343 following unease in Dorvik in favour of controversial Foreign Minister Ralf Hutter and the reply to the coup in DU (see Dorvish-Uwakah Coup of 2342). This resulted in increasing tensions between Dorvish and FUK officialls, particularly in the governments of the two nations. Despite these differences, the groups came together over the Dorvish-Uwakah Treaty of 2345 which set out the timetable for Dorvish-Uwakah re-union. Reunion was achieved in 2350, with by this time as a concillatory gesture the Dorvish troops being fully withdrawn, leaving Selucian troops at two bases in Mygee and Takana the last foreign troops in the nation before they too were withdrawn in 2356.

During this time, tensions grew between the FIEK and the FUK/DRK. In 2357, the failing of a peac treaty to re-establish a united Kirlawa led to an open war between Republican and Fascist forces (see Second Kirlawan Civil War. During this time the Free Union drifted notably to the left, accepting aid from Dundorfian rebels and indeed supporting the rebellion, a situation that nearly caused open war with Rutania. In 2369, following the collapse of the fascist regime, the Free Union voted to dissolve itself into the new united Kirlawa, which would become known as the People's Republic of Kirlawa.

Government[]

The federal government of the Free Union had jurisdiction over most matters in the nation, led by the Federal Parliament which met in the city of Salubris. The legislature was bicameral, with a Free House of Representatives elected irregularly tied to the Pan-National Council elections (maximum term six years) and a Free Senate elected at the same time as the House by the Provincial assemblies.
