It was adopted by the Reichsheer and the subsequent Wehrmacht after the collapse of the Dundorfian Reich, numerous post-Dundorfian state continue to award the Iron Cross in the 1st class and 2nd Class today as part of their military tradition.

It was awarded for "Awarded to recognize battlefield bravery or outstanding leadership in the field of operation." It is considered to be an award primarily for soldiers, NCOs and field-level officers. It has been awarded to senior level military officers on for their exploits on the field of battle; though it is primarily an award for enlisted men and non-commissioned officers.
