As of 5160, the Istalian Navy had a strength of 98,000 active personnel, with dozens of surface and submarine combatant units including LHD, destroyers, frigates, attack and missile submarines and multipurpose offshore patrol ships, auxiliary units and it comprises the Navy Aviation which is equiped with several kind of helicopters and jet fighters.

The Navy's commander officers is the Chief of the Staff of the Navy (Capo di Stato Maggiore della Marina), with the rank of Squadron Admiral with special assignments, who is responsible to the Chief of Defense Staff. He is assisted by the Deputy Chief of the Staff of the Navy.

History[]

The Istalian Navy is renowned for its ancient traditions, which roots lays deep in the Istalian people, a people of sailors like their Selucian ancestors and for which the sea was important also for the geographical features of Istalia, formed by a mainland and an island (the Motto itself of the Navy is a reference to this feature of the country). Renowned are the medieval Merchant Republics, powerful thalassocracies which expanded their influences in several places far from the Istalian shores.
For centuries the Istalian Navy was mainly dedicated to the domestic defence of the territorial waters while only around 42nd century, due to the expansion of istalian interests globally, it became the foundamental force of Istalia for the projection of its force all over the world.

The first important expansion plans for the Navy were put in place at the beginning of the so called New Fourth Republic[1], as it was known the Fourth Republic after the Civil War of 4045, when the country began to be more involved on the international stage. Among the first renonwed operations involving the Navy there was the humanitarian mission in Rutania in the aftermath of the devastating attack to its capital by rogue rebel forces[2]. At the beginning of 42th century Istalia had become one of the members of the World Congress Security Council, it had become an important regional power increasing its committment on the international stage and adopting a more incisive interventionist stance which demanded adeguate tools to pursue this new path: in the first half of the century new highly advanced naval units were commissioned[3][4] to give Istalia a veritable blue-water fleet and among them there was also the first nuclear aircraft carrier of Istalia, the Enrico Bergson[5], which was deployed in the following years for several missions undertaken by Istalia, notably into an important humanitarian mission promoted within the World Congress to help the slaves in Saridan[6] and then for the Rutania shield mission in support of the government of Rutania to avoid further intervention into the second rutanian civil war by part of nations, notably Gaduridos and Saridan, the latter became one of the main opponents of Istalia during this century[7].
It was in this period that facing increasing threats for its interests, especially in Majatra, where Zardugal had undertaken an aggressive uniltaral foreign policies, and aimed to be side by side the other great powers that Istalia expanded at a fast pace its military forces, building for the Navy new aircraft carriers, and then proceeding to provide the country with a nuclear arsenal for which the Navy pushed for the development of new nuclear balistic subamarines carrying nuclear weapons[8][9]. The projection capabilities of Navy also increased with the establishment of the first Istalian military base abroad, the Costa De Oro Naval Base in Baltusia where some of the several carrier groups of the Navy were permanently deployed as NESTANASQ, the Northern Hemispher Strategic Naval Squadron[10][11].
At the end of the 42nd century, heading towards the 43rd, after countless efforts, Istalia boasted one of the largest and most powerful Military Navies in the world, equipped with numerous aircraft carriers and dozens of surface and submarine vessels[12].

In the following decades the Navy continued to be the among the most privileged service of the Armed Forces regarding the following defense programs of the country, aimed at keeping forces constantly at the forefront, to stay abreast of technical developments and equipped with ever more powerful means, like the guided missile cruisers Imperator-class[13] or the nuclear super aircraft carrier Fortitude-class[14][15], in order to face at the best the serious threats Istalia had to face especially in Majatra, like the Majatran Revolutionary Socialist Federation, against which Istalia founded the Majatran Alliance's defensive pact of which it was the main contributor on the side of the defense[16][17][18][19]; the Thallers' sizing of power in Kalopia after the fall of the socialist super-state; the Jelbanian-Deltarian War where Istalia offered a great support to Deltaria, at the time ruled by the Thallers with which, oddly, Istalia achieved to establish quite cordial relations[20]; the Beyteinu's rogue state, a long-lasting opponent of the country with which tensions skyrocketed due to the involvement of both nations into the Badaran Civil War[21][22][23]. It was also this that pushed Istalia in the second half of 43th century to find a new ally in southern Artania and close to northern Majatra, namely Malivia, where it was placed another important military base abroad, the Base Admiral Mateo Madei, also this one put under the administration of the Navy and which granted to the country the deployement also in Artania, after Seleya, of several aircraft carrier groups[24].

The very first years of 44th century saw the Navy heavily involved in one of the major conflicts in which Istalia was involved, the Hulstrian Civil War, which saw Istalia at the forefront in organizing an international coalition under the World Congress aimed to defeat the Hulstrian dictatorial and suprematist regime guilty of genocide against the Gao-Showans. Istalian Navy showed all its mightness during the conflict greatly contributing to the war efforts. Thanks to its very advanced LHD, the Navy was able to transport a large number of men and vehicles, including troops from Vanuku, an unexpected ally against Hulstria after long years of tensions and conflicts[25], while its air force and its missile cruisers were truly devastating in action in Hulstrian territory[26][27][28][29][30].
Istalian naval forces were then involved in other two crisis in support of Istalia's allies: the Narikaton-Malivian War[31] and the Deltarian-Kalopian War[32]. In the aftermath of these crisis, however, the rest of the century represented a long period of peace and stability in Majatra, mainly thanks to the Temrkai-Votta doctrine, an agreement between Istalia and Vanuku within the Majatran Alliance which granted one of the longest period of peace for the continent, although the country had to face issues with piracy, international terrorism, asymmetric conflict and a change in foreign policy pushed the country on adopting other measures then military interventionism to face international opponents, like economic measures and embargoes. For this reason the next important naval program was focused on the capabilities to carry out such kind of actions and provided a reduction of the active units and the refitting of oldest ones[33][34][35].

This peaceful period, however, ended at the beginning of 45th century with the Vanukean-Deltarian conflict during the Jelbanian Civil War, which saw the failure of the Majatran Alliance in negotiating a peace and the rupture of the Istalian-Vanukean alliance after Vanaku carried out a nuclear attack against Deltarian troops in Jelbania[36]. Once again the Istalian Navy deployed its naval forces to the Jelbanian waters, among which several nuclear balistic submarines, as a form of deterrence against further nuclear attacks, to contrast further involvements into the conflict by part of both Vanuku and Deltaria and to support the Jelbanian democratic forces[37][38][39]. With another yet socialist revolution in Deltaria, however, Istalian-Vanukean releations recovered a little and both countrie proposed a naval blockade against Deltaria which however was never put in place due to the fact that neither Istalia and Vanuku wished for a direct confrontation[40][41].
At the end of this crisis another one involved Istalia, the rising of the aggressive Augustine Empire in Zardugal and its invasion of Cobura to which Istalia offered its military assistance before to openly declare war to Zardugal together with Vanuku and Cildania fighting into the West Majatran War.[42][43][44].
In general 45th century was a quite difficult period for Istalia with the crisis of the Majatran Alliance, the economic crisis unleashed by the "Black Tursday", the conflict in Majatra, etcc... which saw its international role downgraded and increased the difficulties to keep in place its large Armed Forces, especially its consistent Navy precisely, which pushed for a new defense plan aimed to rationalize expenses and provided for a reduction in size for all the branches of the Armed Forces although mainly through the introduction of new technologies and more advanced equipements [45][46][47][48]. Despite a decrease in Istalia's interventionist policies and the rationalization measures for the Armed Forces, in the first half of the 46th century Istalian naval forces were still among the most advanced worldwide and again they were deployed in a new deterrent action during the crisis with the Pontesian regime[49].

The deployement of forces in Pontesi was the last action involving the Istalian Navy before the Istalian War against the Thallerist Revolution. Within the Navy, like in the other services of the Armed Forces, the socialist positions at the time in expansion, due to domestic and majatran success of the socialist regimes coagulated around Deltaria, began to make grow the tensions and facing the threat of the establishment of a socialist regime also in Istalia, anti-socialist forces began to plot a coup d'etat. Due to the fact that socialist supporters were numberous also within the Armed Forces, the putchists began to hire mercenaries to support their positions. The large mercenaries forces brought in Istalia, however, showed to be a veritable Kalopian horse: a counter-plot organized by the international Thallerism profited of the political decadence of the country and of the serious tensions and fractures within the society and the Armed Forces to establish a Thallerist Regime. Led by Air Force General Michele Appiano De Borromei the Armed Forces found once again their unity and fighting alongside the Istalian resistance they achieved to defeat the regime. At the time most of the most powerful units of the Navy had already been placed in reserve due to their maintenance costs (too high for Istalia facing the crisis of the first half of the century) or were in basins waiting for refitting works and the Thallerist forces didn't were able to use them, especially the nuclear balistic submarines which already before the beginning of the war were moved far from the Mainland and Alaria by the anti-socialist forces, into the very distant Archipelago of San Michele Islands, in the Naval Base of the island of Montelia, so to avoid that the other faction could size it.

Under the Fifth one and the following First Empire the Istalian Navy recovered its status and once again became one of the largest and powerful Navies worldwide. However, the approach of Istalia on foreign policy showed to be different from the one under the Fourth Republic, less interventionist and more focused on the national defense. Due to this, and considering the needs of the time and the willnot to increase excessively the costs, the at the time governments opted to keep in reserve the remaining supercarriers and the first programs aimed to the defense approved under the First Empire, and focused mainly on the Navy, provided instead the construction of a new class of three light aircraft carrier, indeed LHD, from where operate a new type of multirole jet fighter[50][51], followed after few years by other two larger ampibhous assault ships[52][53]. The first significative operation in which the Navy was involved under the new regime was the conflict with the fascist dictatorial Kazulia: the Navy was sent to escort and defend the civilian ships bringing logistic support to the Kazulian rebels[54] and to carry an expeditionary force to fight the regime alongside the rebels. Into the Kazulian waters the expeditionary fleet was involved in a victorious naval clash which annihilated the Kazulian Navy allowing the fleet to open fire and send its aircraft hitting strategic places and the forces of the regime which eventually was defeated[55][56].

In the first half of the 47th century, instead, the Istalian Navy suffered what was probably its worst debacle, namely the disaster of Alaria, the surprise attack by the Czarist Deltarian Forces against the Istalian expeditionary fleet gathered in north Alaria to carry the Istalian expeditionary force in the Deltarian-occupied Jakania[57]. The Deltarian invasion and occupation of Jakania had pushed Istalia and the anti-deltarian coalition to adopt serious measures against Deltaria and prepare forces to be sent in Jakania to support the local forces. For this reason Deltaria opted for a pre-emptive strike against the Istalian fleet after which the coalition declared war to Deltaria (what was known as the Deltarian-Coalition War). Istalia already few days before the Disaster of Alaria had sent a naval tactical group toward Jakanian waters, which had to be recalled after the surprise attack, but the bulk of its expeditionary force had to be embarked on the fleet gathered in Alaria. Istalia and its Navy syffered huge losses: 4000 deaths among sailors and officials and an aircraft carrier, 7 destroyers, 3 cruisers, 2 frigates while many more ships were severely damaged[58]. The Deltarian attack heavily severed the projection capabilities of Istalia which for the first year of the war was forced rely on the allied naval forces for the deployement of its ground forces[59] and focused on air operations departing from allied bases in Kalopia[60]. The Deltarian attack pushed Istalia to a total conflict with Deltaria aimed to defeat the Czarist regime. During the conflict Istalia was able to take its vengeace for the Disaster of Alaria, like the missile attack from the guided-missile nuclear submarines against one of the most important industrial facilieties of Deltaria[61], and then with the allied nations of the coalition it won the war defeating the czarist regime and imposing a two year occupation of the country, during which, together with Jakania, Istalia was the most involved into the deczarification and dethallerization of the country.
Despite the heavy losses for the Navy, the stability of the international stage in the following decades and the absence of serious threats for the country allowed the country to focus on other projects and to a more progressive recovering of its forces. Indeed the first large investment for the Defense came only in the first half of 48th century, providing for the Navy the construction of a new Fortezza-class aircraft carrier and of 5 new Imperator-class cruisers[62][63], followed then by a new program aimed mainly to a modernization of the existing units and the introduction of new class submarines[64][65]. With the introduction of new balistic submarines Istalia opted then for new directives for the Navy deploying strategic and tactical groups in permanent cruises around the world: the strategic groups of balistic and attack submarines had to constantly ensure the safety and security of the country as strategical deterrence force, while the tactical groups fromed by surface units had multipurpose goals like antipiracy activity, excercises with and support to friend nations as well as fast response humanitarian relief[66][67]. Under the First Empire the balistic submarines of the Navy had become the privileged way of Istalia to deploy its nuclear arsenal around the world, carrying among the most powerful warheads carried by advanced missiles equiped with MARV warheads.

At the beginning of 49th century it was approved what was probably the last large defense program under the First Empire, which provided for the Navy the construction of new advanced multirole patrol ships and new guided missile frigates as well as the beginning of studies and evaluation for a new class of super aircraft carriers and of new destroyers[68][69]. In this period the Navy was involved into the crisis unleashed by Vascania to bring basic and essencial goods to Liore and Medina suffering from the Vascanian naval blockade. In order to protect the Istalian ships the several strategic groups of submarines already cruising around the world were made converge in the area[70]. Istalia then, after that one of its civilian ships was sunk by a Vascanian mine[71], sent an aeronaval group in the area to join the already present submarine forces to actively support Deltaria and Medina in their war efforts against Vascania, mainly to defend and take control of air space[72].
It was after this conflict that finally began the construction and the entering in services of the Coraggioso-class units, the new nuclear-powered superaircraft carriers for the Navy which were the last supercarriers built for the Istalian naval forces, built with an advanced modular architecture for numberous different kind of missions and with a structure conceived for future refit works[73][74].

Under the First Empire the Navy became also a multi-service branch, like it was the Army when the National Gendarmerie was one of its corps: in fact, the Corps of the Coast Guard was created as an authonomous branch of the Navy put under the control of the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transports.

Under the Sixth Republic the country experienced a prolonged political and economic decline which made lost to Istalia its status of great power. Defense priorities shifted once again to domestic sphere and unable to kept and support a large blue-water fleet the Navy was forced to progressively decrease the number of active vessels decommissioning or putting in reserve the oldest units, mainly the blue-water oriented units (aircraft carriers, destroyers and nuclear submarines, etc...). Despite this, at the beginning of the 51th century the Istalian Navy was still one of the best trained and equipped in Majatra and the only branch of the Armed Forces equiped with nuclear weapons. In 5003 the Navy's heads agreed with the heads of the other services of the Armed Forces to form and join the Military Council of the Istalian Salvation Front[75].

In 5048 the Navy was disbanded alongside the whole Armed Forces of Istalia on initiative of the separatist and anti-Istalian government of the recently established Union of Quanzar and Alaria[76][77], the federal state which superseeded the Sixth Republic, due to the fears by part of the new authorities at the power that the military could intervene at the slightest hint of a crisis within the new Union, seeking to preempt any potential political move on behalf of the armed forces and also seeking to consolidate the distinct national identities of the Community of Quanzar and the Alarian Republic. With the disbandement of the Armed Forces also the residial nuclear arsenal of Istalia was decommissioned, thus together the last two ballistic submarines of the Navy.
Few years ago the unitarist forces, once at the government, re-established the unified Armed Forces for the Union of Quanzar and Alaria[78][79] but we have to wait the re-establishment of an Istalian nation with the foundation of the Third Empire for the re-creation of the Istalian Navy.
Under the Union of Quanzar and Alaria and the following Istalian Union of Quanzar and Alaria the Navy, like the whole national Defense, was strongly oriented to the domestic defence[80] and several modernization programs were implemented to introduce new state-of-art ships and weapons oriented to the territorial air space and water defense[81][82].

Finally in 5103 the Istalian Empire was restored and with it an Istalian nation and Istalian Armed Forces. The Istalian Navy was re-established and all the naval Istalian traditions were fully resumed. The authorities of the Third Empire undertook new modernizing programs[83][84][85] to make once again the Armed Forces a global-oriented military apparatus and the Navy resumed its role of main component for the projection of the Istalian forces with the re-introduction of amphibious assault ships (LHD) with aircraft carrier capabilities and blue-water units as well as new guided missile destroyers and frigates. The combattant surface units became a key part of the anti-missile national shield knwon as "Clipeus"[86][87]. Although confidentiality was kept at the maximum level, it is suspected that the Navy has also been re-equiped with a nuclear arsenal deployable through new balistic missile submarines[88]. The rediscovered global ambitions of the Istalian Defense were also further made explicit with the entering in service of a new multipurpose STVOL jet fighter for the Navy's LHDs and of the new nuclear-powered attack submarines Romula-class[89]. Despite the Istalian Navy at the date has returned to be among the most advanced and powerful worldwide, its size is far from that it had under the Fourth and Fifth Republic and the First Empire, due to current decreased threats for the national security and to the mainly domestic-oriented defense policy adopted under the Istalian Union and kept also by the Third Empire[90].

Coat of arms, ensign and motto[]

Coat of Arms of the Imperial Navy[]

The Istalian Navy adopted a new coat of arms in 4572 after the Imperial Reform. It presents an olive branch and an oak branch bound together by a ribbon with the national colors of Istalia which encircle a golden circle of rope surmounted by a Naval Crown, containing on a blue background a silver anchor behind another thinner circle of rope around a golden Imperial Coat of Arms above a Star of Istalia, also on a blue background. Finally, two silver swords are crossed behind the largest circle of rope.

The previous Republican Coat of Arms (4046-4572)[]

Republican Coat of Arms

The republican Navy adopted a Coat of Arms based on the so called Senna's Arms Design, used also by the Army and the Air Force: a modern selucian shield divided into sections by a deep blue rhombus with in the middle a tipically sea anchor as symbol of the Navy, while shield and sections were golden bordered. The triangular sections in the upper quarters were colored with the tipically istalian colors green and red while the lower section was coulored of Azur. Above the shield there were a naval crown.

Naval Ensign[]

The Naval Ensign of the Istalian Navy is essentialy an Istalian flag where the Coat of arms of the Istalian Empire is replaced by the Coat of Arms of the Navy.

Motto[]

The motto of the Istalian Navy, Il mare non dividerà la Patria (The sea will not divide the Fatherland in luthorian), comes from a famous sentence pronounced by Arturo Gabriele II, King of Istalia between 1855 and 1863, when, during one of the numberous war against the Quanzar Emirate, some of his councilors proposed to retire the forces on the island using the Strait of Ingris more as a favorable defensive line against the quanzar assaults, a real renunciation of sovereignty over the rest of the peninsula in the eyes of the King who with his sentence refused to use the sea just as a defensive perimeter and so leave the rest of the Country to his fate.
Having greatly impressed the high Navy hierarchies, against the proposals of the King's councilors, the sentece was adopted as official motto of at the time royal navy and later adopted also by the Navy of the first Istalian Republic in 2262.

Ships' Identifying Code and nomenclature[]

Istalian Navy ships are identified by a alphanumeric code consisting of two letters identifing the ship type and by the pennant number. The first letter of the code identifing the ship type is always "N" which stand for "Nave" (Ship in istalian). Colloquially each unit is called in this form "Imperial Nave + Name of the ship" (in Istalian the military ships are preceded by the masculine article while the civilian ships by feminine one); for example the code NC 105 identifies the destroyer Indomito (the "C" stands for Cacciatorpediniere, Destroyer in Istalian), which is colloquially called "Imperial Nave Indomito" or simply "l'Indomito".
