Clans are the basic social and political organization of the Jelbek people. Although each Jelbek Clan claims descent from a single common ancestor, clans in Jelbania are political networks based on regional, tribal, and family loyalties, originating as alliances by marriage and kinship. Clans frequently control certain government departments, though there is fluidity between clan loyalty and membership in government agencies. Clans are patriarchal in nature, with their male members exercising political, military, and cultural authority. As Jelbeks practice exogamy, marriage within the clan is strictly forbidden. Each clan is identified by its own "Tamga" (Тмха Tmha), an abstract seal or stamp functioning as an emblem of the clan. The tamga's primary role is to identify property or cattle belonging to a specific clan, usually as a cattle brand. The use of the tamga by Settled Jelbeks, both rural and urban, has declined with the advent of modernization, although there is a resurgence in the use of tamgas as a result of nationalism and ethnic pride.
Jelbek Clans are divided into three "Hordes" (Jelbek Орт Ort), namely the Great Horde, the Middle Horde, and the Lesser Horde, corresponding to tribal military alliances of steppe nomads created in the Middle Ages. Jelbek legend states that the three Hordes were founded by the three sons of the mythical forefather of the Jelbeks.
Clans of the Great Horde (Jezort)[]
The Great Horde (Ѥзорт), inhabiting the Perimor Steppes, is the largest and most important of the three Hordes. Members of the Great Horde are renown for their political and leadership skills, usually forming the nation's ruling elite, including former King of Jelbania Krsyijkai Jeztri or President-Atabeg Mrjkai Vrn.
