Law enforcement in Istalia is currently administrated by agencies at both national, or federal, and local level. At national, or federal, level it is provided by two agencies while local forces are organized within the constituent communities and the several administrative sub-divisions. The two main police forces in the country are Federal Police, the civil national police underneath the Ministry of the Interior, and the Imperial Gendarmerie, underneath the Ministry of Defence.

Alongside these agencies there are some other ones at national and local level focused on specific duties or with jurisdiction on restricted areas and territories.

Organization[]

Law enforcement agencies at national, or federal, level are under the overshight of the Ministry of Interior, with provincial division and jurisdiction managed on the local level under the authority of the Quaestor (the local head of police) in accord with the Prefect, the provincial representative of the Government. The highest office in charge of law enforcement is the multi-agency "Federal Department of Public Security" (Istalian: Dipartimento Federale di Pubblica Sicurezza).

Federal Department of Public Security[]

The Federal Department of Public Security is a division of the Ministry of the Interior whose functions are the implementation of public order and security policy; technical-operational coordination of police forces; the management and administration of the Federal Police; the management of technical and logistic supports. The Department's tasks include also the the classification, analysis and evaluation of data for the protection of public order and security and for the prevention and repression of crime. At its summit is the Director General of Federal Public Security.

Overview[]

In a different way from other countries, Istalia does not have multiple specialized agencies for immigration, drug offenses, patrolling etc, but each “area” is investigated by dedicated sections of each federal agency as well as local agencies. For example, border and Maritime patrolling are undertaken by the Imperial Gendearmie; in the Sarrentine Community within the Sarrentine State Police there is a division known as Highway Police Patrol (Istalian: Polizia Stradale) with focus on patrolling the roads and various crimes committed on Sarrentine roads; ; or also, both the Sarrentine and Alarian local police forces have within them a Penitentiary Department whose members operate as corrections officers and manage prison security, inmate safety and transportation. Therefore, crimes covering multiple "areas" do not need to be covered by multiple agencies.

On a town level the head of Public Safety is the Mayor. Municipal officers work on minor crimes on a local basis, from traffic offenses to small-time drug dealing and illegal camping. Each town or city has its own police department, usually called Municipal Police (Istalian; Polizia Municipale), but they have limited jurisdiction and duties. Local officers can check driving licenses, enforce municipal laws and ordinances and carry out investigations for robberies and minor offenses, but they cannot form a "riot squad" or interfere with homicide or general investigations by the Fedearl or State Police or the Imperial Gendarmerie.

National Agencies[]

Federal Police[]

The Federal Police of the Istalian Empire  (Istalian: Polizia Federale dell'Impero Istaliano) is the main police force of the country, which is a federal, full-powered agency, with different divisions for each specialized area of interest. It is responsible for combating crimes against federal imperial institutions, international drug trafficking, terrorism, cyber-crime, organized crime, exercises forensics and criminal investigation and all functions related to administrative and judicial police duty.

Its headquarters are in Romula, and there are Communities, Regional and Provincial divisions throughout the Istalian territory.

Imperial Gendarmerie[]

The Imperial Gendarmerie is a gendarmerie-like military corps with police duties. They also serve as the military police for the Istalian Armed Forces. Alongside the functions of public security, preservation of the public order, detective work, forensics and criminal investigation, administrative and judicial police duty, it is also responsible for combating public corruption, white-collar crime, money laundering, immigration, border control, airport security and maritime policing, having assumed functions which were under the responsability of the Financial Police until 5048.

The Imperial Gendarmerie, furthermore, can assist both the Federal Communities to carry out public security and administrative and judiciary policing functions and duties, depending on the agreements established between the two Communities. If it is the case, its area of responsibility includes smaller towns, rural and suburban areas, while Communities' Police Forces are in charge of cities and downtowns, matching the role that the previous National Gendarmerie traditionally had.

Financial Police[]

The Financial Police, (Istalian: Polizia Finanziaria) was a military corps under the authority of the Minister of Finance, with a role as a police force focused on financial crimes. The Corps was in charge of financial, economic, judiciary and public safety: tax evasion, financial crimes, smuggling, money laundering, international illegal drug trafficking, illegal immigration, copyright violations, anti-organized crime operations, credit card fraud, cybercrime, counterfeiting, terrorist financing and surveillance at sea for financial police purposes, but also customs and borders checks, maintaining public order, and safety, political and military defense of the Italian borders in case of need.

The Financial Police was active until 5048 when, under the Union of Quanzar and Alaria, its duties were incorporated within the Federal Gendarmerie. When the Third Empire was founded and the Imperial Gendarmerie replaced the previous one, it kep the same functions.

Penitentiary Police[]

The Penitentiary Police once operated the Istalian prison system: it carried out the task of managing people subjected to provisions restricting or restricting personal freedom. The Corps guaranteed the enforcement of provisions restricting personal freedom, guaranteed public order and safeguards the security within penitentiary institutions, participated in the activities of observation and treatment of prisoners, their translation from penitentiary to penitentiary, in courtrooms for carrying out the processes and at external places of care, and in case of hospitalization it performed the service of piantonament. Under the Union of Quanzar and Alaria its duties were assumed by specialized divisions of the local police forces.
