The Selucian Golden Medal (Selucian: Aurum Numisma Seluciae) was established by Consul Kyrian Aetius Flavius , with the motto Virtuti et mérito. Its objective is to reward people for their actions in benefit to Selucia and the humanity. Since its creation, it has been the most distinguished civil award that can be granted in Selucia.
Even though it grants no nobility or political powers, the medal points its bearers as relevant figures in the history of the nation, putting them as very likely candidates to name streets, universities or other infrastructures.
People that have received the medal are called "Custodians".
Award process[]
Nominations[]
Nomination forms are sent by the Aurum Committee to about 3,000 individuals, usually every 5 years. These individuals are generally prominent academics working in a relevant area, with inquiries also sent to governments and former laureates. The deadline for the return of the nomination forms is six months later. The Aurum Committee nominates about 50 potential laureates from these forms and additional names. The nominees are not publicly named, nor are they told that they are being considered for the prize. All nomination records for a prize are sealed for 100 years from the awarding of the prize.
Selection[]
The Aurum Committee prepares a report with the advice of experts in the relevant fields. This is submitted to the prize-awarding Aurum Committee, which meet to choose the laureate or laureates by a majority vote. Their decision, which cannot be appealed, is announced immediately after the vote. The awards can only be given to individuals.
Posthumous nominations[]
Posthumous nominations are presently permitted, and has happened only once.
