Tropica (Mātou: Tropika), officially known as the Federation of Tropica (Mātou: Whakaminenga o Tropika) is a country located in Temania. Principally composed of two major islands and hundreds of smaller ones, it is located to the south-east of Temania and west of Vascania.

Having been a former colony of Luthori, Dankuk, Yingdala and Zardugal, it has been an independent country for approximately the past millennium. During this period it has experienced significant political instability and was briefly occupied during the Dovani War. Since the middle of the 47th century, Tropica has operated as a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy with a high level of political and ethnic pluralism.

The majority of the population falls into two broad ethnic and cultural groups: either the Tropican peoples or Tropicans of Artanian descent (chiefly Luthorians). In modern times there have been significant efforts to achieve reconciliation between these two groups through cultural integration and various modifications to the constitutional arrangement.

The regions of Tropica

The geography of Tropica has played an important role in shaping the modern country throughout the colonial period and before. As it is composed of hundreds of islands in total, Tropica has a varied climate. The majority of islands (including the two largest islands: Teo and Kukunui) are dominated by a relatively mild forested terrain with some mountainous regions.

In some of the regions (particularly towards the north) there is a more tropical climate with a number of rainforests and associated flora and fauna. Due to it position on the Temanian tectonic plate, Tropica is considered to be a part of the continent of Temania (sometimes known as Temania-Tropica). In political terms it has been grouped with Vascania in recent year, sometimes referred to as "Temania and Vascania". In terms of political geography, Tropica is composed of thirty five regions of roughly similar population but varied geographic size.

History[]

For several centuries, Tropica was a colonial territory ruled variously by Dankuk, Luthori, Seko, Yingdala and Zardugal. Luthorian rule had the most significant lasting impact on the nation and today, most Tropicans speak Luthorian even if it is only as a second language.

Economy[]

Main article: Economy of Tropica

Tropica's economy has experienced significant change over the past two centuries. Under the administration of the Labour Party of Tropica, the economy moved towards the worker cooperative model pioneered by Seko's Liberation Movement however subsequent governments have attempted to reverse this trend. In comparison to most international economies though, the country retains a strong tradition of worker influence in business.

Government and politics[]

The government and politics of Tropica takes place within the framework of a federal parliamentary monarchy.

Government[]

Tropica uses cabinet government, in which all ministers must be members of the legislature. The government is headed by the Prime Minister.

Legislature[]

The legislature, Parliament, is composed of two houses.

Judiciary[]

Tropica's judiciary is organised in a manner which preserves the traditional pre-colonial judicial systems along with a more modern judicial system inherited from Luthori colonial rule. The traditional courts presides on most family and personal status legal matters in the rural areas. The modern court system covers everything else and is structured in a conventionally hierarchical manner with a Court of Appeal at the apex of the judiciary.

A map showcasing the dominant ethnic groups throughout the country

The majority of the Tropican population belongs to one of several Tropican ethnic groups. The largest of these groups is the Mātou people though they form less than half of the overall population. For various reasons, the Mātou language has become adopted as a lingua franca alongside Luthorian.

Aside from ethnic Tropicans, the next largest population group are Tropicans of Artanian descent or Artanian-Tropicans. The vast majority of these are Luthorians. In the past century the country's Raktavani population has increased dramatically and is now the third largest ethnic group and the largest recognised as an "ethnic minority".
