Dr. Yi Junkai (born 18 September 4279) is an Indralan surgeon, politician and former-Grand Chancellor. Yi was first elected as a Lotus Party member of the Min Provincial Conference. Following Kwan Zhiyong's resignation, Yi declared his candidacy to succeed her. Yi was elected Leader of the Lotus Party on 17 April 4330. Yi was popular in his home province, but faced strong opposition across the country. Despite winning the Grand Chancellory in 4330, his party lost 133 seats, becoming the 6th party in the National Conference.

Yi was able to maintain the confidence of the National Conference through deal brokering and concessions to his coalition partners, the Jien Party and the Phoenix Party. Yi also expanded his government to the Social Democratic Party, after the election put his coalition into a minority.

Yi was not able to overcome his personal unpopularity and was defeated in 4335. He declared his intention to remain leader of the Lotus Party, but was defeated in a leadership review vote in 4337.

Despite his failure to hold onto Lotus Party seats, Yi's administration is viewed as having accomplished many legislative objectives including lowering the luxury goods tax[1], balancing the budget[2][3], expanding the Indrala Scholarship Fund to fully subsidize tuition[4], the foundation of the Indrala Public Works Fund[5], and sweeping labour reforms[6].

Early Life[]

Yi was born on 18 September 4279 in a village near Xiangao, Shu. Dr. Yi Junkai was born to impoverished fishers. He was so weak and sickly that his parents weren't sure he would survive; they waited several months before registering his birth at a local temple. Both his mother and father were lost at sea during Typhoon Yutu (4289) when Yi was 10 years old. With few family members alive, and none able to take care of him, Dr. Yi grew up in an orphanage in Longmen, Han. Yi worked as a labourer part-time to save money while attending high-school. After repeatedly finishing at the top of his class, and following his two years of mandatory military service, he studied medicine at Enshi University on a scholarship. During his college years, he was vice captain of the rugby team and became involved with the Students' Federation. He met and married fellow student Qiao Nuan at the age of 24, describing her as "his first and last love." Dr. Yi graduated in 4307 and finished his residency in 4314. Yi and Qiao had their first and only daughter, Yi Xiulan in 4308, however Qiao Nuan died during childbirth as a result of eclampsia, leaving Yi alone to raise their child while he was still a resident at Enshi University Children's Hospital.

Pre-political career[]

Following the completion of his residency, the Yi family moved to Mudanwan, where Dr. Yi would work for 11 years as a pediatric oncologist. During his time in the medical field, Dr. Yi became prominent and respected throughout the province. He resigned from the hospital in 4325 to run as a Lotus Party Provincial Conference candidate.

Min Provincial Conference Representative (4225-4330)[]

Yi was elected to the Min Provincial Conference in 4325. During this time Yi served on a number of health committees. Yi announced his candidacy to succeed Kwan Zhiyong as leader of the national Lotus Party while still a Provincial Conference Representative in 4329. He remained in this role until his election as Grand Chancellor.
